PEMBROKE DOCK FESTIVAL GROUP Lantern Festival Winter 2007 < click here for a slideshow. www.pembrokedockfestival.org.uk The Pembroke Dock Festival Group was supported in it's development from an informal grouping of people with the seed of an idea (to support the regeneration of Pembroke Dock through culture and the arts) to a fully constituted voluntary organisation by the Llanion Communities First Team and Partnership. The Summer of 2006 saw the first week-long Pembroke Dock Midsummer Festival as the fruit of that capacity building work.
The Pembroke Dock Midsummer Festival has been chosen as the representative image at the launch of the “National Strategic Framework for Community Development” in Wales. To find out more about sponsoring the festival please contact Don Earl - Secretary, 29 Munro Court, Pembroke Dock, SA72 6ND. Tel: 01646 682565 e:mail earldnn@aol.com

Pembrokeshire Family Challenge If you have one or more children under twelve and would like to improve the food your family eat and amount of exercise you take, then this is for you! Pembrokeshire Family Challenge is a FREE, fun programme, which the whole family can enjoy. "It brought our family closer together and I'm happy I did it." What does it involve? A personal lifestyle coach will work with you and your family to agree a twelve week programme of home based activities to improve your diet and levels of physical activity. "Our lifestyle coach was very good, helpful, informative and fun." The coach will support you and your family throughout the programme and you'll also have the opportunity to join in activities with the other families taking part. "It was fantastic, great fun and nice to meet people." The project has been designed to help families overcome many of the barriers they face to adopting a healthier lifestyle - time to exercise, childcare, transport, the cost of healthy foods and knowing how to cook them. "It was really good. We were given our own lifestyle coach . . . who basically told us what we were doing wrong and helped us change our eating and exercise habits." Who can take part? Support is provided for an initial period of 12 weeks, with an opportunity to extend this if required. Phone us: 01437 775 775

Walking at any pace has the following benefits:
Walking at a brisk pace also:
Brisk walking is when you walk fast enough to make you breathe a little faster, feel warmer and have a slightly faster heart beat. But it should always be comfortable and you should still be able to talk! Samba Doc Samba Doc emerged out of a series of samba workshops that took place in Pembroke Dock throughout the autumn of 2008. The workshops were supported through the communities first music trust fund and music on the move and were led by Fliss Fleck a samba teacher based in West Wales. The purchase of a starter kit of samba instruments was made possible through a small grant from the Communities First Trust Fund. The series ran for eight consecutive weeks and was a great success with an average of around ten people attending each week. The project culminated in an outdoor public performance at the head of the annual Pembroke Dock Midwinter lantern parade. The band got drenched, but the buzz and excitement of this first public performance was not easy to forget and Samba Doc was well and truly on its way. So if you have ever secretly nurtured an ambition to join a samba band, now is your chance to do something about it. To find out more or to book a place please contact Stuart Colquhon on 01646 680508 or Vicky Parsons on 01646 651534

Every year, 1,150 volunteers contribute over 50,000 man-hours to producing community newspapers in Wales, and they’re crying out for more to join them. With a combined circulation of around 47,000 nationwide, a considerable amount of effort goes into keeping all those readers entertained and informed of what’s going on in their communities, which means there are ample opportunities for volunteers of all ages to get involved.
DEBT ADVICE In 2006, The Citizens Advice Bureau in Pembroke Dock made a successful bid to the Department of Trade and Industry’s Financial Inclusion Fund programme to fund a Debt Caseworker to work in Pembrokeshire. In April 2007 Sue Morris and Nina Pope were employed as Trainee Debt Caseworkers on a job share basis, working alongside Chris Jones and Heather Lander, the Debt Caseworkers already working at the Bureau and funded by the Legal Services Commission. Since Nina and Sue started they have advised people on a range of debt problems; whilst some people have only a couple of bills that they are finding it difficult to pay others are faced with court action to repossess their homes. Debt casework involves gathering information on how the problems arose, often because of a sudden change in circumstances such as ill health or relationship breakdown, as well as details of income and expenditure. Once this information has been gathered, the advisors can give advice on any extra income people could claim, explain court procedures, help to fill in forms, discuss which debts must be paid first and help work out a plan for dealing with the people they owe money to and getting back in control of their finances. To find out more about face to face debt advice call into the CAB at 38 Meyrick Street between 10am and 2pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday or call us on 01646 621719.
