The Llanion Ward and Community Facilities

Llanion electoral ward lies on the Eastern side of Pembroke Dock, one of the main towns of Pembrokeshire.

The population of the ward at the 2001 Census was 2528, comprising just under 30% of the town of Pembroke Dock itself (popn. 8661).

It is a diverse ward comprising industrial, agricultural, commercial and residential areas, bounded by town, rural roads, and a long waterfront with the Milford Haven Waterway.

People living in Llanion perceive the ward as a number of distinct areas defined largely by the main roads and rail line dissecting the ward.

Pembroke Ferry lies to the North of the ward underneath the Cleddau Toll Bridge.  Historically this was one of the main crossing points on the Cleddau waterway.

Llanion Park
is a much newer area, consisting  largely of private housing constructed since the 1970’s.

London Road lies on the main route into the town and to the Irish Ferry Terminal which generates a large amount of heavy traffic.  There are also a number of retail, industrial and commercial areas along the London Road.

Waterloo
is an industrial area to the North of London Road and to the east of the approach road to the Cleddau Bridge.  The area contains a high proportion of traditional engineering and related industries, however, in the last few years, modern technologies have become established.  Within the Waterloo area lies the Waterloo Gypsy Site.

Bush and Park Estate
is an area of social housing lying to the south of the South Pembrokeshire Railway line. The estate has developed in three stages.  The earlier housing was built in two stages in the late 1940’s and mid 1950’s.  The later addition to the estate was built around the mid 1960’s and is of the high-density design favoured at the time.

Llanion was identified as ranking 76th in the 100 most deprived wards in Wales in the 2000 Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation.  The index was generated from a series of 6 indicators which were combined to give an overall index.   These were; income, employment, health, education, housing and access to services.

Industrial

The town of Pembroke Dock is on a major European road route to Ireland via the Irish Ferries service to Rosslare in southern Ireland.  Historically, the dockyard from which the town gets its name was a military dock and shipyard, which, today, is a commercial port.  Traditional industries to the locality largely serve the oil industry, shipping, and the dockyard with a strong emphasis on engineering and the service sector.  A number of these are located in the Waterloo industrial estate and other smaller industrial estates within Llanion.  There is some recent development of new industries on the ward, particularly around upper Waterloo and the Cleddau Toll Bridge.

Commercial

There is a commercial/retail presence both within and on the borders of the ward.  There are three large stores on the London Road including a Tesco supermarket, a Kwik-Save supermarket on Pier Rd., and two other supermarkets lying adjacent to the ward border.

Waterfront

The shoreline is approx. 4km long, divided into two main sections, the main Milford/Daugleddau waterway and Cosheston Pill, both Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI’s).  Much of this shoreline is not easily accessible although there is some commercial activity around Hobbs point and East Llanion boatyard to the west.  At the mouth of Cosheston Pill, the Pembrokeshire Watersports Centre is a major recreational and training centre for the county.
